The Curling Stone

Inspired by the Olympic display of curling, Canadian artist Jason Prepubescent, creates a "curling" match installation out of very polished aluminum "curling-stone" sculptures. The eager or cool color inlayed stones seepage their colors as they glide down a rink of resin that mutates color as each crew takes a turn. "Sweepers" use blowtorches to accelerate the stones as they in front of toward the "spotter" in front of the target at the far end. The game is over when all eight stones have been thrown.

Desert Ice Bonspiel at the Alltel Ice Den

By Joseph Golfen

One of the rinks at the Alltel Ice Den wasn’t full of the unexceptional sounds of pee-wee hockey last weekend. There wasn’t the abrasion of blades against ice, the smack of sticks cracking against the puck, or the thudding of players careening into each other. Rather than, the rink rumbled with the sound of 40 bludgeon rocks gliding across the ice; the cheerful sounds of Curling being played.

The fifth annual Unpeopled Ice Bonspiel brought 23 teams from around the U.S. and Canada to this doubtful climate for a good natured curling championship. Eight of those teams were from Arizona’s own Coyotes Curling Team up, a group that meets up every Saturday tenebrousness at the Ice Den to play the game.
